Our mission

The Answers Were
Always Here.

Delta Foundation was founded in Greenville in 1969 by 14 civil rights and community leaders whose work grew out of the Delta Ministry. They held a simple conviction. Solutions to poverty in the Mississippi Delta should be built by the people who live here. From the start, the Foundation created businesses and programs managed by, and designed for, low-income families.

That work continues in Greenville, Leland, Belzoni, and across Washington County. We prepare middle schoolers for high school and careers, give younger scholars a summer of reading and leadership, and are building a new path for young adults touched by the justice system.

To promote community, economic, social, and human development for underserved residents in the Mississippi Delta, either directly or indirectly, through initiatives and partnerships.

“When 14 civil rights and community leaders founded Delta Foundation in 1969, we believed that the people of the Mississippi Delta deserved meaningful opportunities to improve their lives and strengthen their communities. More than five decades later, our commitment remains the same: to promote community, economic, social, and human development for underserved residents throughout the Mississippi Delta.”
Spencer Nash, President and CEO

Freedom Village, just outside Greenville, began as a refuge for displaced farmworkers during the civil rights era, and Nelson Street was the heart of the city's Black business and blues district. In the Delta, the struggle for freedom and the fight for economic opportunity have always shared the same ground.
